Episode 97 – Super Famicom Japan Exclusives w/ NIKOTENGOKU

New Year! New Episode! Starting off 2023, our 5th year as a podcast, we’re joined once again by our good pal, NikoTengoku! The Super Famicom (or as we know it outside of Japan, the Super NES) is host to a COLOSSAL list of excellent game soundtracks, but the Japan exclusive stuff usually gets overlooked. Niko helps us pick 10 awesome tracks that we know you’re gonna love, along with a very, VERY silly episode as per usual with Niko. We poke fun of certain game title names and songs, get a visit from not one but TWO legacy PixelTunes Radio characters, AND officially “knight” Niko as our 3rd co-host! Though his role will remain as a guest contributor to the show, we’re always excited to be joined by Niko and he always brings the funny and engaging discussions to XVGM Radio!

Big thanks to NikoTengoku for guesting on the episode! As always, check out his stuff here:

Episode 87 – Super Nintendo: ORCHESTRATED with Orchestral Fantasy

Episode 87 – Super Nintendo: ORCHESTRATED with Orchestral Fantasy

The Super Nintendo is known for having some of the most lush compositions in 16 bit history. But have you ever wondered what these tracks would sound like with real instruments? Our guest today is Andrew Thompson who runs a musical project where he answers that very question and the results are EPIC! Mike and Justin sit down with Andrew to discuss and compare his orchestrated versions with real instrumentation, while mostly staying faithful to the original compositions. If you’re a fan of JRPGs on the SNES, this is NOT an episode to miss!
***There were some connection issues regarding the first two breaks so we apologize in advance for the static-sounding voice on Andrew. After numerous trial and error, we decided to record separately and combine the breaks after the problem could not be solved. Thanks for understanding.***
We’d like to thank Andrew for being on the show. Please check out his content on both Youtube and Soundcloud as well as the latest album,

Episode 73 – Zelda Handhelds

Episode 73 – Zelda Handhelds

The Legend of Zelda is perhaps most famous for being one of the flagship franchises on Nintendo consoles, expanding into the third dimension and consistently innovating as time has marched on. However, the franchise has also had its fair share of exploration on handhelds beginning with Link’s Awakening and continues to this day on the console/handheld hybrid Nintendo Switch with the remake all these years later. Today on XVGM Radio, we explore the vast history of the Legend of Zelda on handhelds and dive deep into their soundtracks all while sharing our own memories of playing them. From Mike and Justin’s shared dislike of Tingle to Mike’s sad story about his grandmother and even our patron pick gets a little deep! Draw your Master Sword, grab some headphones and get ready for some amazing music on Episode 73 of XVGM Radio!

Episode 35 – Super Nintendo Jams vs. Sega Genesis Grooves (Retro World Expo Live Panel)

Mike and Justin Hosted their first ever panel together, and they did it at Retro World Expo in Hartford, CT on September 28th, 2019! The guys wanted to do something to attract a big audience, and what better way to do that then to have the ultimate retro battle when it comes to VGM: Super NES versus Sega Genesis! After cultivating a wide range of tunage, the guys got the audience to participate in a cheering contest to determine which song was liked better. The categories of Best comparison, Capabilities, and a favorite from each of the guys for every console.

We’d like to take this time to apologize for the audio snafus. This episode won’t sound like our normal higher quality content, and it’s mostly due to some recording errors. However, we were able to preserve the audio thanks to another format we recorded in, so please excuse the occasional issues which may pop up.

What did you think of the picks? Did you agree with everyone’s voting? What’s your vote?

Episode 28 – The Namco 163 Famicom Expansion Chip

Episode 28 – The Namco 163 Famicom Expansion Chip

Namco, a long time developer and publisher in the video game industry, wanted to take their Famicom development to the next level. They created the NAMCO 163 expansion chip, which enhanced audio capabilities on the Famicom; making the system sound like a PC-Engine at points. A small set of games had this chip installed in it, and while not all of the games we’re talking about took advantage of all 8 additional sound channels, the music is still phenomenal. That’s why Mike and Justin are deep diving into the sound of the NAMCO 163 chip. Listen to some interesting facts about the chip and it’s development, hear Mike try to pronounce Wagan Land, and hear the XVGM gents talk about gold-digging mice brides…all on this very interesting episode of XVGM Radio!

Episode 17 – GameBoy w/ Niko (WiiGuy309!)

Arguably the most popular handheld gaming system in history, the Game Boy was a smorgasbord of great games, all on the go. Thankfully, portability didn’t rule out having a stellar sound chip and this episode is just the tip of the iceberg. We enlist the help of Niko, better known as WiiGuy309 or simply Wii Guy, to help us sort through the entire Game Boy library to bring you some memorable tracks! Between Mike getting the details on the Jungle Book movie completely wrong, to an unofficial sponsorship from Taco Bell, this episode will have you reaching for your monochromatic Game Boys and a pair of headphones!

Episode 12 – Capcom Disney with Rhythm & Pixels

Episode 12 – Capcom Disney with Rhythm & Pixels

Sometimes considered the greatest crossover of its time, when Capcom and Disney worked together, the results were a mixed bag of highs and lows regarding gaming. However, the music was always a treat; one that many gamers would possibly consider some of the best of its time. On this episode, Justin and Mike are joined by Rob and Pernell of Rhythm & Pixels, a fellow VGM podcast focused on friendship and awesome tunes. With Rob and Pernell picking the majority of the tracks this time around, this episode is sure to delight fans on all spectrums. From discussion about mermaid butts, talking about dysfunctional households amongst the Goof Troop gang, and call ins from various Disney characters, prepare to visit the Magic Kingdom, the Disney Afternoon and more on this episode of XVGM Radio!
Huge thanks to Rob and Pernell for joining us for this part 1 look at Disney based VGM. We’ll be doing a followup crossover episode on their show soon where we take a look at non-Capcom Disney games. Check them out at: https://rhythmandpixels.com/
