Episode 92 – Nicole Marie T Composer Interview

Episode 92 – Nicole Marie T Composer Interview

Indie composers of video games are leading the way with their creativity, ingenuity and hunger to create the next wave of classics. One such composer is Nicole Marie T, who we had the pleasure of interviewing. From her love and appreciation of Sega to her evolution into a Sony fan, Nicole’s video game upbringing shines through her music as she churns out tons of tunes that we showcased in this interview. From hearing about her reaction to seeing her name in the credits of her first game to her excitement over orchestral tunes, you’ll get to hear a prime example of the next generation of VGM composers in this very episode. Justin and Mike are stoked for you to hear the sounds of Ghoulboy, Robozarro and beyond in this composer interview!
What did you think of Nicole’s tunes?

Episode 82 – An Evening with Barry Leitch

Episode 82 – An Evening with Barry Leitch

Barry Leitch is mostly known for his compositions on the Top Gear racing game series, and more recently, Horizon Chase Turbo. But if you dive deep enough, you’ll uncover a wealth of video game music magic from a man who was inspired by the greats of the C64 era. Starting out as a teenager, his earlier creations aren’t as fondly remembered by the composer himself but the journey to how they became what they were is the path that we have taken on this interview. In this episode, Barry tells us all about working with the limitations of retro systems, the time a tiny TV made a massively negative impact on his Utopia SNES port and what it was like to cram big samples into tiny audio chips. He chats about what it was like working with other notable composer Dean Evans and the process he goes through to write music. Mike shares some ridiculous nostalgic memories regarding Gauntlet Legends, Justin shares a tale about his Rush 2 N64 experience and more on this in-depth interview with VGM Legendary composer, Barry Leitch!

Episode 70 – Paradise Killer w/ Composer Barry” Epoch” Topping

Every now and then a game comes out that features a soundtrack that puts the fire back in our VGM lovin’ hearts. Paradise Killer is exactly that kind of OST. The XVGM Radio guys are joined by Barry “Epoch” Topping, the composer of (what Mike considers) the best VGM soundtrack of 2020. From the vocal-infused, saxophone wailing on the intro theme “Paradise (Stay Forever)”to the mix of genre-hopping across the70s and 80s (and even a little bit of the 90s), this soundtrack features an eclectic mix of music. From City Pop/Future Funk and Vaporwave influences, to straight up New Jack Swing and 80s Dance, and down to synthwave and easy listening, these tunes got it all! Hear Barry’s story about how he transitioned from wedding band player to VGM composer, his video game influences, listen to Mike and Justin talk about the game in-depth with some interesting reveals about the game and it’s soundtrack directly from the composer himself! All on this episode of XVGM Radio! Don’t miss out on this one!

Episode 51 – Yooka-Laylee Back to the Fluture

Episode 51 – Yooka-Laylee Back to the Fluture

When Playtonic Games set out to develop a new 3D Action Platformer in the vein of Donkey Kong Country and Banjo Kazooie, they went back to the original composers who made those games sound so fantastic: David Wise (DKC) and Grant Kirkhope (BK.) But how did those games influence the sound with this new franchise that’s been born out of a love and labor of the 64 bit era? Today on XVGM Radio, we’re lucky to have both David Wise AND Returning guest/Composer Grant Kirkhope on the show to talk about the musical evolution from Donkey Kong, to Banjo-Kazooie, and finally, how those two influenced Yooka Laylee and Yooka Laylee & The Impossible Lair. From Mike trying to make sense of musical genres (and trying not to fanboy too much), to David and Grant uncovering some information about Grant’s hiring process that they’d never known, to Justin sharing his fascination with Wild West VGM, get ready to collect DK Coins, Bananas, Jiggies, and Pagies on this star-studded interview from XVGM Radio!

Episode 44 – Valfaris with Curt Victor Bryant

What oozes neon, smells of decaying bugs and gives you a neck injury? Why, it’s Valfaris, of course! Released in 2019, Valfaris brought a 1980’s Heavy Metal Magazine aesthetic to the run-n-gun genre, and along with it came an equally brutal, tranquil, and exciting soundtrack by Ex-Celtic Frost member, Curt Victor Bryant. It’s not everyday you get certified rock stars on the podcast, so Mike and Justin talked up a storm with the composer! From his beginning days in Switzerland at the jukebox, to his time in Celtic Frost, Curt lays it all on the line in this tell all episode that is currently our longest to date! We talk Energy Babes, heavy metal references, his injection of world and new age music into this thrash/groove/extreme metal soundtrack that will get the blood pumping!
Huge thank you to our guest of honor, composer Curt Victor Bryant! Please check him out on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/curtvictorbryant

Episode 38 – Shakedown: Hawaii with Mat Creamer

Grit your teeth as you plow through innocent bystanders, hold up stores for insurance protection, and burn forests down with your flamethrower…it’s your world in Shakedown Hawaii. The successor to Retro City Rampage had a lot to live up to, and thankfully it doesn’t suffer from sequelitis, as it’s one of the best indie games this year. Take on the role of an aging 1980’s CEO, or his spoiled rotten to the core son, and even a hired mercenary to do the dirty work. All three are at your disposal here as you steal cars, burn down parking lots, and crush anything in your way: including pesky consumer rights! Take on the role of CEO as you figure out the best way to ruin customer’s lives and make cash doing it. Despite the slimy premise, the game is tons of fun and backed by an incredible 80s synthwave soundtrack by Norrin Radd aka Matt Creamer. Matt takes us through the ups and downs he faced getting the official soundtrack released, and answers all the hard-hitting questions all while providing fantastic insight into his compositions.
The XVGM Radio guys are super thankful to VBlank Games and Matt Creamer for hooking us up with some giveaway codes! Exclusive to Patrons, you’ll be able to possibly win either a digital copy of the game (PS4/Switch options only) or the digital soundtrack for free! Episode 30 – Perfect Dark w/ Grant Kirkhope

Episode 30 – Perfect Dark w/ Grant Kirkhope

Following the N64 smash hit, Goldeneye, RARE lost the Bond license. But this didn’t matter much to them, as their spiritual successor to Goldeneye pushed the Nintendo 64 to its limits. Hailed as one of the greatest First Person Shooters of all time, Perfect Dark introduced gamers to Joanna Dark, the Carrington Institute, the evil corporation Datadyne and the alien races of the Maians and the Skedar. But such a unique Cyberpunk-fused sci-fi stealth journey needed a perfect soundtrack to fit it’s perfect name. Enter Grant Kirkhope, taking over for Graeme Norgate, along with David Clynick; a trifecta of composers that crafted a sound that was as unique on the N64 as it was technically impressive. Today on XVGM Radio, we are extremely excited to bring you an in depth interview with Grant Kirkhope, the primary composer on this stellar shooter. Hear about Grant’s surprising hard rockin’ roots and how a fellow RARE employee helped change his life forever. Listen to Grant’s stories about the E3 where Perfect Dark was showcased, how he and the other composers created the tunes, and what Grant thinks could be Joanna’s favorite cocktail. Count how many times a very excited Mike says “Extravaganza,” and hear Justin be in awe of Grant’s composing style. We promise, this episode won’t leave you in the dark.

Episode 15 – Timespinner with Jeff Ball

Plenty of games nowadays have tried to emulate and pay tribute to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. But few are able to pull it off utilizing the minute details, especially when it comes to the music of the Playstation era. Enter, Timespinner, 2018’s indie darling. A game that tells the story of a blue-haired Time Messenger named Lunais, in a side scrolling, action-platforming adventure that will even send yourself time travelling: with a huge contribution to this feeling from composer Jeff Ball. Experience a soundtrack that will send you back to the 32-bit era of gaming. From deep discussions about inclusion and diversity of the characters’, learning about Jeff’s tactics to make the game’s soundtrack echo the brilliance from the games of yesterday, to creepy Mario Paint music chat, this is Jeff Ball and the music of Timespinner.
