Episode 93 – X-Men Game Music w/ Carlos from Heroes Three

Marvel Comics’ X-Men series is a franchise that means a lot to millions all over the planet. In the 90s, it was the pinnacle of X-citing, engaging storytelling coupled with a major media boost thanks to the comics, collectible cards, Saturday morning cartoons and of course, video games. On today’s episode of XVGM Radio, Mike and Justin invite fellow X-Men fan Carlos from the Heroes Three Podcast to share some nostalgic memories on how the gaming experiences featuring the mighty Mutants changed their lives forever. Choosing from mostly the 90s era of X-related games and their music, the boys dish the dirt on 10 awesome songs from that era. Listen to tales of Mike piddling around with ZSNES’ emulator to make music remixes of Cyclops’ theme. Hear how the X-Men changed Carlos’ life when it came to becoming an artist. Revel in Justin’s tale on how his appreciation for Genesis music has flipped the switch. They share their favorite X-heroes, open up about their pre-pubescent love of Psylocke and try to figure out what’s up with people who are anti-Capcom guitar tones. The guys discuss the deeper meanings of the X-Men metaphor and how it relates to real life in this personal, fulfilling episode that features songs you love AND some you might discover for the first time!
Big thank you to Carlos from The Heroes Three Podcast! Follow him on Twitter and check out his podcast!

Episode 84 – Yakuza Games w/ Alex From A VGM Journey

Episode 84 – Yakuza Games w/ Alex From A VGM Journey

On XVGM Radio, we generally are pretty knowledgable about the subject matter of both game music and the game series we discuss. But what about when we’re not familiar with a franchise or its tunes? We bring in someone who’s played them all and in this circumstance that would be patron saint of video game music podcasts and leader of his own show, Alex Messenger of A VGM Journey. Together, we discuss Alex’s history with the Yakuza series as Justin and Mike experience the franchise through Alex. From misheard vocal lyrics “Can You Hungry – Just Brillo!” to Mike’s experience growing up listening to whatever his parents played in the car and of course Justin had to jokingly give Mike a hard time about a track! Come along for the trip to Japan as we chat about one of Sega’s newer yet most prominent IPs of the PS2 era and beyond! This…is a journey through the Yakuza franchise’s video game music!
Big thank you to Alex from A VGM Journey for joining us on this show! You can check out his podcast at https://anchor.fm/vgmjourney or other podcatchers!

Today on XVGM Radio, we explore the vast history of the Legend of Zelda on handhelds and dive deep into their soundtracks all while sharing our own memories of playing them. Episode 63 – Same Song, Different System

Episode 63 – Same Song, Different System

Comparing and analyzing differences is often done on XVGM Radio, but when it comes to the Same Song, Different System episodes, it’s on a whole other level! Today, Mike and Justin are doing a deep dive into the world of retro gaming video game music in a special free picks episode, but unlike most free picks that happen every 20th episode, we’re doing a comparison to other ports and versions of these songs! Mike attempts to serenade Justin with his best (or in this case, worst) Judy Kuhn vocal impressions, the guys chat about foreign 7-Up mascots, and discuss the highs and lows of songs that get arranged elsewhere. Welcome to XVGM Radio’s 63rd episode!
Commercials and Janine take a break this episode due to the format, but they’ll be back on Episode 65! What did YOU think of the versions of the songs we played? Episode 62 – The Music of Crash Bandicoot

Episode 62 – The Music of Crash Bandicoot

Crash Bandicoot games are often praised for their tight gameplay, innovative level designs, fun characters, and brilliant graphics…but the music, as usual, is the real all-star attraction on this week’s episode as the XVGM Radio gents journey to the Wumpa Islands, and beyond! Mike hits on some crates wedged in between TNT, as he risks playing some truly oddball tunes whereas Justin plays it safe and platforms with ease on some of the most iconic Crash tunes heard in the series! Grab some wumpa fruit to snack on as you learn about some games you might’ve shrugged off because they weren’t the holy PS1 trinity, as Mike and Justin have some truly nostalgic and nutty fun with the music of Crash Bandicoot!

Episode 48 – The Music of Final Fantasy VII (feat. Knight of the Round)

Episode 48 – The Music of Final Fantasy VII (feat. Knight of the Round)

Hailed as one of the greatest video game experiences ever, Final Fantasy VII was a game changer. It revolutionized the Japanese Role Playing Game market and the art of storytelling in a video game at the time of its released. Now, almost 23 years later, we are about to see a remade version of the game that captured our hearts back in 1997. But on the eve of Final Fantasy VII Remake’s release date, XVGM Radio sat down with Knight of the Round band member, Justin Taylor, to chat about the significance of the original game, it’s landmark music by Nobuo Uematsu, and showcase KotR’s latest release, a Metal-infused thematic cover album aptly titled: “SEVEN.” We’ll give you one guess what the theme is. From chatting about Cid’s character growth to the importance of Tifa in Mike’s teen years and Justin’s teenage confusion over numbering the Final Fantasy games back in the day. It’s a musical celebration of a true masterpiece, both musically and gameplay wise. Also, MAD Cait Sith hate!
We’d love to hear what you thought about this landmark JRPG soundtrack. What was your favorite song that we played? Did we miss your favorite tune? Shoot us an email at XVGMRadio@gmail.com or join in on the discussion at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/XVGMradio

Episode 36 – Castlevania Oddities

Episode 36 – Castlevania Oddities

Castlevania music has a special place in our hearts. But what about the wacky, wild world of Castlevania cameos, bizarre ports and side story games and other ‘Vania obscurities? Mike and Justin take the listener on a bumpy hayride past Dracula’s castle, and into his backyard to listen to some of the stranger versions of mainline games in the Castlevania franchise. From mobile to only in the arcade and even multiplayer preferred, the series has certainly had its ups and downs but the tunes have mostly always been the best kind of wall meat: tough to find, yet fully satisfying! So, grab your garlic water and rave sticks and join XVGM Radio as they explore these weird and wacky Castlevania remixes…with a few originals to boot!

***Please note: We caught an error in our information regarding the IIDX Bloody Tears Track during the final hour, so we updated the show notes here and will make a clarification in a future episode.***
