Episode 45 -Series Spotlight on Rhythm Heaven w/ Nikotengoku!

In the mid-2000s, Nintendo threw their rhythm-based games hat into the mix with the Game Boy Advance Japanese exclusive, Rhythm Tengoku. The franchise eventually was brought to other regions of the world, and with it, a smorgasbord of tasty audible treats. From smooth jazz to ska to hip hop infused metal, this series has it all when it comes to musical genres! Screaming from the highest of high rooftops regarding his love of the series is none other than today’s returning guest: Niko, aka NikoTengoku, better known as the artist formerly known as Wiiguy. Niko, Justin and Mike sit down and chat about Niko’s streams featuring made up lyrics to a Rhythm Heaven song, Justin blanking out dog sound effects, and plenty of other hilarious moments!

Episode 44 – Valfaris with Curt Victor Bryant

Episode 44 – Valfaris with Curt Victor Bryant

What oozes neon, smells of decaying bugs and gives you a neck injury? Why, it’s Valfaris, of course! Released in 2019, Valfaris brought a 1980’s Heavy Metal Magazine aesthetic to the run-n-gun genre, and along with it came an equally brutal, tranquil, and exciting soundtrack by Ex-Celtic Frost member, Curt Victor Bryant. It’s not everyday you get certified rock stars on the podcast, so Mike and Justin talked up a storm with the composer! From his beginning days in Switzerland at the jukebox, to his time in Celtic Frost, Curt lays it all on the line in this tell all episode that is currently our longest to date! We talk Energy Babes, heavy metal references, his injection of world and new age music into this thrash/groove/extreme metal soundtrack that will get the blood pumping!
Huge thank you to our guest of honor, composer Curt Victor Bryant! Please check him out on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/curtvictorbryant

Episode 43 – The Sounds of the FM Towns

Episode 43 – The Sounds of the FM Towns

Japanese computer systems and consoles rarely coincide, but when it comes to Fujitsu, the two go hand in hand. Meet the FM Towns Computer System and the FM Towns Marty Console. Two systems with similar audio components that take the best of the 16 bit era (FM Synth, Redbook Audio, and PCM Sample-based music) and combines them all into one. Today’s episode, the XVGM Radio hosts are digging deep into the world of Fujitsu’s Towns systems to uncover some absolutely stellar music. Hear Mike showcase his love of Freestyle. Listen to Justin intentionally mispronounce a game title for the first time and rock out to the sounds…of the FM Towns.

Episode 42 – Sierra, an Audio History

Episode 42 – Sierra, an Audio History

Sierra Games is heralded as one of the premiere adventure game developers and publishers that existed. Deep care went into the development of the games they created, thanks to a husband and wife creative partnership between Ken and Roberta Williams. Together, they formed Sierra Games, a developer and publisher which created some of the most memorable adventure games ever made. But what about the soundtracks to these sprawling titles? Today on XVGM Radio, Justin and Mike are joined by fellow podcaster and long time personal friend, Brian Siecienski, who is part of the Pixel Stories Podcast. Together, these three share personal stories about their nostalgic experiences with Sierra Games and the soundtracks from the past, all while covering a good chunk of Sierra Games’ legacy.

Episode 38 – Shakedown: Hawaii with Mat Creamer

Episode 38 – Shakedown: Hawaii with Mat Creamer

Grit your teeth as you plow through innocent bystanders, hold up stores for insurance protection, and burn forests down with your flamethrower…it’s your world in Shakedown Hawaii. The successor to Retro City Rampage had a lot to live up to, and thankfully it doesn’t suffer from sequelitis, as it’s one of the best indie games this year. Take on the role of an aging 1980’s CEO, or his spoiled rotten to the core son, and even a hired mercenary to do the dirty work. All three are at your disposal here as you steal cars, burn down parking lots, and crush anything in your way: including pesky consumer rights! Take on the role of CEO as you figure out the best way to ruin customer’s lives and make cash doing it. Despite the slimy premise, the game is tons of fun and backed by an incredible 80s synthwave soundtrack by Norrin Radd aka Matt Creamer. Matt takes us through the ups and downs he faced getting the official soundtrack released, and answers all the hard-hitting questions all while providing fantastic insight into his compositions.
The XVGM Radio guys are super thankful to VBlank Games and Matt Creamer for hooking us up with some giveaway codes! Exclusive to Patrons, you’ll be able to possibly win either a digital copy of the game (PS4/Switch options only) or the digital soundtrack for free! Multiple chances to win, and all you’ve got to do is share this episode on some form of social media (or just join our Discord) AND most importantly be a Patron tier of $1 or more! Thanks again to Brian Provinciano and Matt Creamer for the codes! You must be signed up by November 30th! We’ll announce the winners on the December 2019 Live Show and will reach out to the winners via Patreon!

Episode 36 – Castlevania Oddities

Episode 36 – Castlevania Oddities

Castlevania music has a special place in our hearts. But what about the wacky, wild world of Castlevania cameos, bizarre ports and side story games and other ‘Vania obscurities? Mike and Justin take the listener on a bumpy hayride past Dracula’s castle, and into his backyard to listen to some of the stranger versions of mainline games in the Castlevania franchise. From mobile to only in the arcade and even multiplayer preferred, the series has certainly had its ups and downs but the tunes have mostly always been the best kind of wall meat: tough to find, yet fully satisfying! So, grab your garlic water and rave sticks and join XVGM Radio as they explore these weird and wacky Castlevania remixes…with a few originals to boot!

***Please note: We caught an error in our information regarding the IIDX Bloody Tears Track during the final hour, so we updated the show notes here and will make a clarification in a future episode.***
