Episode 65 – Winter Trax 2: Icelectric Boogaloo

Happy Holidays to all! For the final episode of 2020, in what’s been an absolutely bonkers world, Mike and Justin take a moment to sit down and enjoy the holidays together (socially distanced, of course.) What follows is a celebration of winter and holiday music of the video game variety, discussions about getting dat nut, Prehistoric Turtlesaurus’, and of course…gift giving. The guys unwrap gifts they’ve given to each other, all while closing out the year with a smile and some fun tracks that really get you into the holiday season.

Episode 64 – Classics vs Covers w/ Lucia La Rezza

Episode 64 – Classics vs Covers w/ Lucia La Rezza

Classics versus Covers has been done by XVGM Radio before, but never with a solo artist! Today’s episode is a treat, as Justin and Mike sit down with Lucia La Rezza, an Italian violinist and all around fan of video games. From her beginnings with the Game Boy to her self-admitted Playstation obsession, Lucia is as much of a fan of working on music as she is for video games; and the two aren’t mutually exclusive. We showcased 6 of her covered arrangements and compare them with the original, all while chatting about her Sephiroth crush, being a bassist in a Power Metal band, her shared musicianship and love of Nobuo Uematsu with our co-host Justin, all while getting musically hugged by Ms. Lucia La Rezza!
Big thank you to Lucia La Rezza for joining us and sharing her wonderful arrangements of such classic game tunes. Please check her out on her website: https://www.lucialarezza.com/

Episode 63 – Same Song, Different System

Episode 63 – Same Song, Different System

Comparing and analyzing differences is often done on XVGM Radio, but when it comes to the Same Song, Different System episodes, it’s on a whole other level! Today, Mike and Justin are doing a deep dive into the world of retro gaming video game music in a special free picks episode, but unlike most free picks that happen every 20th episode, we’re doing a comparison to other ports and versions of these songs! Mike attempts to serenade Justin with his best (or in this case, worst) Judy Kuhn vocal impressions, the guys chat about foreign 7-Up mascots, and discuss the highs and lows of songs that get arranged elsewhere. Welcome to XVGM Radio’s 63rd episode!
Commercials and Janine take a break this episode due to the format, but they’ll be back on Episode 65! What did YOU think of the versions of the songs we played? Do you disagree with Mike and Justin’s opinions? Shoot us an email at XVGMRadio@gmail.com or join in on the discussion at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/XVGMradio

Episode 62 – The Music of Crash Bandicoot

Episode 62 – The Music of Crash Bandicoot

Crash Bandicoot games are often praised for their tight gameplay, innovative level designs, fun characters, and brilliant graphics…but the music, as usual, is the real all-star attraction on this week’s episode as the XVGM Radio gents journey to the Wumpa Islands, and beyond! Mike hits on some crates wedged in between TNT, as he risks playing some truly oddball tunes whereas Justin plays it safe and platforms with ease on some of the most iconic Crash tunes heard in the series! Grab some wumpa fruit to snack on as you learn about some games you might’ve shrugged off because they weren’t the holy PS1 trinity, as Mike and Justin have some truly nostalgic and nutty fun with the music of Crash Bandicoot!
Big time thank you to Heather Pasquale for voicing Tawna and TefiTafi for voicing Coco! Check out her art on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tefitafi/?igshid=ppj5cx90hiki

Episode 61 – Spookyfest 2020!

It’s Halloween time! Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, the guys had to, of course, cancel the “live” festival of previous years for something more….virtual. Well, you’ll understand when you listen. A ghoulish mix of modern and classic tunes will flood your VGM well, and in 7 days, you’ll STILL be jamming to 2020’s SPOOKYFEST!

Episode 59 – VGM in Motion

Do you feel the wind in your hair as you drive across that bridge everyday while headed to and from work? Is the sweat beating down your brow as you jog to the rhythm of your favorite VGM? Or are helmets, wheels and safety gear involved in your jams from game land? Well this episode of XVGM Radio is right up your alley, as we journey through 11 fantastic tracks involving motion in video games. Move through the neon future with four Ninja Turtles of the Teenage Mutant variety, Hop across tall buildings as Faith in Mirror’s Edge, and rocket through the various machs with your Wipeout arcade race car…and there’s plenty more where that came from! Mike and Justin return to close out the first 60 episodes with an exploration of motion in sound. Put the top down, close your eyes and put it in park as you turn the volume way up to the sound of…..i…is that a woodpecker?!

Episode 58 – Chrono Trigger 25 Years Later – An Epoch Journey

It’s about time! Hailed as one of the greatest JRPG experiences of all time, and for good reason, Chrono Trigger’s the complete package for all gamers. Therefore, Justin and Mike bring in a special guest who not only is a huge fan of the game and it’s stellar soundtrack, but also named his podcast after a song title: Drew Mackie of Singing Mountain. Drew joins the XVGM Radio boys for a celebration of the ages, as they discuss the 25th anniversary of the game as of today (Yes, we’re breaking schedule to release on the official 25th birthday of Chrono Trigger!) What transpires is a nostalgic trip into the past full of name corrections, Mike sharing the track that made him cry, and of course our overlord Lavos screech discussions (Praise Lavos, of course.) Grab your Masamune, your bowls of Eyes Cream and prepare to howl with the Black Wind, as we celebrate 25 years of this milestone game!

Episode 57 – Zuntata

What do Karaoke Machines, bizarre PCM voice samples and shamisens have in common? They’re all points of discussion on today’s episode where Mike and Justin do a deep dive on Zuntata, the in-house composers and live band for Taito! Formed in 1983, Zuntata was largely carried by composers like Hisayoshi Ogura, though there were over a dozen members over the years, all of which brought us some of the best video game music ever! We’re taking a deep dive into the back catalog of Zuntata’s music from all different genres of gaming. So get ready to test your burger, meditate…meditation and hang out with Daddy Mulk and his casino, because the XVGM Radio guys are ready to rock!
Thanks to our pal Ed Wilson of VGMBassy for helping with re-verifying these tracks are all definitely Zuntata. Head to TheVGMbassy.com for his podcast!

Episode 56 -VGM Homework

School’s out and summer is all the rage…but that doesn’t stop Mike and Justin from challenging their minds when it comes to video game music! Back on Episode 54, Mike and Justin did an episode entirely on Continue themes in games, which was challenging to say the least. But now, they’re headed on a different part of their VGM studies by assigning each other some homework! Mike picks a game and Justin picks a track from that game, and vice versa. Each person also gives a brief explanation on why they picked the game they picked! The results are some engaging and exciting songs from games that the XVGM Radio guys would never typically pick for each other! Listen in as Mike shares his hatred of Axl from the Mega Man X series, Justin shares his love for Westerns, and Janine eats Triscuits from home since she has the night off! All on this educational yet entertaining episode of XVGM Radio!
We’d love to hear what you thought about our Homework episode ! Did you have a favorite tune? What game do you want to play the most after this? Shoot us an email at XVGMRadio@gmail.com or join in on the discussion at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/XVGMradio
